WE HAVE THE POWER!!

Many years ago I tried forming a committee to deal with Purchasing (Non HOA related). We were just a few homes at that time and the committee never got off the ground.

Today, we are a community of over 500 families and we still are growing. As such, the power to influence better pricing on common things that we all require, is now available.

I served on two HUGE purchasing groups that had an overall purchasing power of hundreds of millions of dollars. The Greater NY Hospital Association and the Joint Purchasing Corporations both dealt with better contracts and pricing for hospitals. A hospital was NEVER forced to abide by any contract unless they made the decision to submit their volume for going out on bid for a particular item. However, logically, if the volume for hundreds of hospitals is in the millions of dollars, a company would give it's lowest price in order to get this business versus one hospital giving a very small dollar volume.

Here at Regency, as Goodie Mollen has shown, getting 150 + homes to have their driveways sealed, proved that a company would come in at $40/driveway versus your calling someone in and paying $70 for the same thing. The only question being, will it be the same thing? We've had that happen. Not always is the lowest price the best. The quality of the items might be different and/or the service might not be up to par. The purchasing committee then deals with these issues and they can exclude some companies that are sub-standard.

Here's the way it worked when I was on the various Purchasing Committees.

1. You pick something, let's say Exterminator services.
2. The Committee gets input from the Community as to who they currently use and what is provided and at what cost.
3. The committee will also ask if you were pleased or not pleased with the service and why
4. The committee will then send a message out to the community saying that we are entertaining bids from companies X,Y,Z and would you want to be included.
5. Naturally you can opt out or you can say, I only want company Y. The committee will only tell each company how many homes are involved and X and Z will not be given your home.
6. Once the bids are opened by the committee, ONLY those homes who were included in the bid will be allowed in on the contract. The vendors would be told that they can't add other homes at our contract prices. The other vendors would be told that they cannot UNDER BID the contract in order to circumvent the winning bid. Sounds complicated but it really isn't.

Naturally the committee would formulate it's own procedures but we do have the buying power and we can include other adult communities in this group in order to strengthen the buying power.

We need at least 7 volunteers to work on this. Let me know if you are interested and if we can find 7 volunteers we will pursue this endeavor.

NEW RECORD SET BY A REGENCY RESIDENT

For years, Al Maltzman, the "MALTED MAN" of Regency Basketball, held a record that everyone thought was unbeatable. Al, who is Regency's Sr. Olympic Basketball coach, has put together teams that have won medals every year and many were Gold and Silver. Just this week in practice, Al saw his record of getting in 26 CONSECUTIVE FOUL SHOTS BROKEN! Not only was the record broken but it reached a new plateau of probably never being duplicated. Howie (MR. BASKETBALL) Sacks was able to sink, are you ready, 43 CONSECUTIVE FOUL SHOTS. Keep in mind that in professional Basketball if you shoot 85-90% of your foul shots, you are considered great. So I have decided that by achieving this new record HOWIE SACHS will now be known as "SHOTGUN". So please give Howie the recognition he deserves and when you see him just say, "HELLO, SHOTGUN!"
