A THANK YOU NOTE FROM BRENDA KLEINMAN

I am sadly writing to inform you of the passing of my brother Michael Moskowitz. He had been bravely battling cancer for many years. He died on January 20th a day before his 65th birthday.
I came home from Florida to be with my family during this hard time....Once again the Regency support system was there with hugs, food, phone calls, cards and enduring friendship. What a place to live!

A MESSAGE FROM PHYLLIS GREENBERG REGARDING A BONE MARROW TRANSPLANT/DONATION

Marc Weinstein is a student in my daughter_in-law, Lisa's school at Solomon Shechter in Marlboro. Marc is 9 years old, and in desperate need of a bone marrow donation (taken through blood). She is asking if we as a community can help mobilize for fundraising? It costs $72 a person just to be tested. You can only be 18-60 to donate the bone marrow, but asked if our friends at will donate funds or time to help out when the bone marrow drive takes place. It will be sooner rather than later because at this point it is a last ditch effort.
Dear Phyllis,

You may recall that in May of 2002 the congregation ran a Bone Marrow Registration Drive for Marc Weinstein, a child in our nursery school. Marc, and his brother Ross, were both born with a rare blood disease. Ross underwent a transplant before the drive, but at the time there was no suitable match for Marc which is why the drive was held. Tragically, eight days after the drive’s conclusion, Ross passed away. Understandably, the Weinsteins elected to wait as long as possible before proceeding with Marc. Among their reasons, they hoped that time might bring cures, a better donor match, and/or better procedures leading to more successful outcomes.

Today, Marc cannot wait for a transplant any longer and there is still not an ideal match for him. While any individual might be a match, it’s most likely that someone of common ancestry would be a match—namely someone Jewish. I’m afraid that Jews tend to be underrepresented in the world’s Bone Marrow/Stem Cell registries.

We urgently wish to have another Bone Marrow Registration Drive and knowing how wonderful people in the community are we expect a large turnout. But we cannot set a date today because becoming registered is not free. While getting tested is as simple as putting a cotton swab against the inside of your mouth, having the lab work done to analyze the cells is costly. An organization that works to promote testing in the Jewish community, Gift of Life, is working with us to provide the kits at a fraction of the cost using their own funds but the cost is not free.

We are trying to raise money to buy at least 500 kits and then we will quickly organize the drive. We are asking you to help by sponsoring kits for $72 per kit. Every dollar raised will only be used for this purpose.

A life hangs in the balance. We may not find a match for Marc, but Barry and Cindy Weinstein are greatly comforted to know that this effort will mean that more matches will be available for other desperate families (you remain in the registry until you turn 61 years of age).

Please help us. Whether you can give $720 for 10 kits or $72 for one, every gift is incredibly precious and possibly life saving. To help, please send a check payable to Marlboro Jewish Center (103 School Road West, Marlboro, NJ 07746) with BONE MARROW DRIVE in the memo section. However, please send me an email if you plan to do that so that we can begin to finalize our plans knowing that a contribution is coming from you. Please reply by February 1st for your gift to have the greatest possible impact, but gifts will be accepted up until the day of the drive. That date can be set by the end of the week when we know how much was raised. Time is of the essence. Help Make A Miracle

Please feel free to forward this note to other people who might be willing to help and please “talk it up” to others in our community (only about a third of the congregation has email).

If you have questions please feel free to reply to this email or you can call me at 732.614.5846. If you wish to volunteer for the drive or help in another way, please let us know.

B’shalom,

Michael Danziger
