PLEASE READ THIS AND FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS

I am not sure why Advanced Broadband never sent me this from the very beginning but I guess it's better late then never. If you read what they wrote you probably are unaware that some legitimate emails have been filtered out and you would have NEVER known or received them. IT IS IMPORTANT THAT YOU DECIDE WHAT IS JUNK OR SPAM AND NOT LET A COMPANY DO IT FOR YOU! Here is their email to me and if you desire to keep receiving my emails, please follow their directions on

There are few who will disagree that SPAM (junk e-mail) is a huge burden on productivity and a general nuisance to manage. In an effort to assist our customers in dealing with this Internet epidemic, Advanced Broadband has installed server based SPAM filters. No SPAM filter will ever be 100% effective, however these filters due help reduce the amount of obvious junk e-mail and give users a tool by which they can better manage the inflow of unwanted mail. SPAM filters work, among other ways, by scanning messages for certain keywords, phrases, suspicious patterns, or other identifiers normally associated with bulk, unsolicited email distributions. Individuals and organizations that flood the Internet with SPAM run very sophisticated operations and constantly adapt their business practices in an effort to defeat and bypass SPAM filters. The engine on which these filters run are therefore designed to adapt to these changes and to learn from feedback provided by users what is to be considered SPAM and what is not.

Please note that the SPAM filters we have installed will only apply to email accounts provided by Advanced Broadband. If you use an e-mail account provided by AOL, Earthlink, your employer, or any other provider the filters will have no effect. You are advised to contact your email provider to inquire about their own efforts to provide SPAM control.

The filters AB has installed have been operating for about a month already. Many users have already commented how much less junk email is being received. The SPAM filters work by analyzing all incoming email and assigning a SPAM score from 1 to 10.

Emails rated 9 and 10 are considered obvious SPAM and they are automatically deleted by the server. You will not receive a copy of these emails.

Emails rated 7 and 8 are now deposited into a new Junk Folder that has been added to all AB email accounts. These emails are very likely SPAM, however to avoid accidentally deleting a legitimate email, users have the opportunity to periodically review these emails before they are deleted. Items in the Junk Folder are automatically deleted after 30 days. Please note that this new Junk Folder is located on the AB server and is different from any junk folder that may be in your POP3 client such as Outlook. You can access this new Junk Folder by logging into your community Intranet and clicking on the email icon.

Emails rated from 1 to 6 are deposited into your inbox with the SPAM score generally indicated to the left of the Subject Line. The web mail client now gives users the option to set additional SPAM filters. For example, if you notice that most emails you receive with a SPAM score of 6 are also junk, you can set up a filter to automatically move these emails to your Junk Folder or create a new folder for emails with SPAM score of 6. To set up additional filters, log into your community Intranet and open the web mail client.

- Click on Options, then on Filters.
- Click ‘Add New Filter’
- Give the filter a name – example ‘Spam-6’
- Set up the Rule on how to handle these emails:
o Example (If 6)
- Set up the Action on what to do if the rule is met:
o Example (Move to )
- Click on “Update Filter”
- The filter will now be applied to all incoming email.

Alternatively, you could move these emails to a separate folder (be sure to create the folder first!) or you could automatically reject or delete the message. Be careful though, you don’t want to make your rules too harsh that you end up missing important emails. Note that if you routinely get email from an unwanted source, you can now create a filter to automatically reject or delete those messages as well.

If you receive email that is SPAM and does not appear to be stopped by the filter, we kindly ask that you forward a copy of the message to IS-SPAM@rockliffe.com. This will help the software learn what you consider spam so that it can update the logic and algorithms that it uses to analyze emails for SPAM content.

Disclaimer – AB does not read or monitor email traffic in any way. The SPAM filter is an automated software engine that applies statistical analysis to determine the likelihood that an email is an unsolicited bulk distribution. AB does not warrant or represent that the filter will be 100% accurate and does not assume any liability for the use or reliance on this system for personal or business purposes.

Again, AB has assured me that all filters for MONMOUTH.COM (my email address) have been removed. If you still aren't receiving my emails, it is probably do to how your email program is setup. Remember check your JUNK/SPAM box and follow the instructions that were given to you on how to put these emails into your inbox.

VISTA - MICROSOFT'S NEW OPERATING SYSTEM

My cousin, the guru of computer operating systems and viruses (as well as the family emailer), sent us the following information regarding Microsoft's new operating system - VISTA. Here is his opinion:

By now you've probably heard some ballyhoo about the newly released Microsoft Windows Vista operating system which is purported to be more advanced, and more secure, than Windows XP, and all the older preceding Windows operating systems. Attached, FYI, are two Microsoft articles about Vista , with specific feature links, for you to learn what makes Vista the "greatest" Windows operating system ever devised . . . according to Microsoft of course.

My personal opinion is that, as with every previous Windows operating system, regardless of all the pre-release beta testing having been performed, that there might be undiscovered bugs and security vulnerabilities in Vista that will require patches and fixes downstream. For this reason, I'm not jumping into Vista for at least 6-months to a year or more, to see if Microsoft has to release Service Packs, and security (and other) updates as they now do for XP every 2nd Tuesday of the new month.

According to Microsoft, the biggest advantages of Vista is that it's a more secure (against malware invasion) operating system than its OS predecessors. While this may be so, I'm still going to wait and see. While the current XP operating system has had it's security holes attacked frequently by malicious malware hackers . . . for which Microsoft regularly releases fixes . . . it's my further opinion that hacker's new focus will be on Vista, and less on XP.

Furthermore, I learned that although Microsoft no longer offers any support on Windows operating systems preceding XP, they will continue to offer free support on XP until year 2011, and paid support for five years thereafter. So, I feel comfortable continuing with Windows XP for quite a while. However, if I decide to replace my computer in the foreseeable future, I'll make sure that it's operating system is Vista (and not XP), and I advise you to do likewise.

THAT'S IT FOR NOW
